Land lubbin’ and dreamin’ of salt spray

We’ve been off the boat now for a little over a month and are getting our land legs back.  Its been a serious lifestyle transition going from cruising to working and living in an apartment.

Brian’s getting well into the swing of things at his contract job and is enjoying working in a different sector of software at Near Earth Autonomy.  Its a very cool company in a nifty part of town doing really nifty stuff.  He also cleaned up nicely once we got him back in work “uniform.”

First day of work.  First time wearing actual shoes since February!

There are certainly tradeoffs of leaving the boat for a stretch.  I really, really miss hanging out in the cockpit, anchor hopping, swimming, kayaking, sailing around, all the good stuff.  On the other hand, it is nice to watch a storm roll in and not have the anxiety of monitoring the anchor or tossing around in our berth all night.

We’ve been taking advantage of being smack dab in the heart of the city.  It’s a very walkable area with lots of great restaurants and entertainment.  So far we have visited the Frank Lloyd Wright house Falling Waters, walked the botanical gardens, watched a Pirates game, gone to a show in the cultural district, walked our feet off exploring downtown, and discovered the myriad of local craft brews available.

On the list of fun to be had is kayaking the Allegheny river, biking the trail around the city, the Heinz activity center, the Duquesne incline, the Andy Warhol Museum, and the Carnegie museum of natural history.  Plus, football starts soon and we will be joining our fellow Yinzers watching the Steelers play on the projection screen in our apartment complexes courtyard.

Its all great fun and the lifestyle is great, but I still miss my floating home.  Perhaps the phrase “absence makes the heart grow fonder” applies here?
